I actually have a few machspeed’s if you look back in my reviews, I think I have one on the machspeed “trio”.. It’s a company in austin that picks up good chinese imports and tries to support them, at least more than other shoestring mp3 player vendors. Ther interface is not perfect and there is no telling how long it will last but I liked the trio’s simplicity, I figured I’d try another of their players. These days since all the mp3 players are made in China brand doesn’t mean anything anymore, support is the only thing that decides quality. I’d thought about upgrading firmware on it but it was sufficiently capable that I haven’t had a reason unless the firmware has more features and a better interface because its a little bit strange, but not so strange as to be totally disorienting. This is like a poor mans Samsung T9, but it comes with 4 gigs. The “Oasis” that machspeed sells looks a bit better and has a micro sd slot. The UBS on this player says its 2.0 but its max throughput is 1MB/sec which is actually USB 1.0 . Also the voice recording format (and fm recording) is WAV, I haven’t checked to see if its 16-bit and 44Khz.. If it could handle a transfer rate of 1MB/sec it can handle raw recording, and with 4GB you have about 6 hours if the player is empty, so it’s probably not bad.. On this one I haven’t been able to get the radio to work.. That’s probably a reason to upgrade the firmware. But Firmware upgrade is one way street, it could screw up the player.. MP3 playback quality and amplification is excellent, it even includes a 3D demonstration with the player which was good enough to make me think I was hearing things in the room that weren’t there. The best part of this players is the speaker in the back of the player, it’s plenty loud and can be used to play podcasts, if you lay it down on a resonating surface like a table it can augment the lower frequencies, the speaker is loud enough that its not so muffled that laying it back down will make it quiet.. For 30 bucks its the best mp3 player I’ve seen so far.. But it’s still untested, I mean, give me 3 months, I’ll get back to you.. If it wasn’t for the speaker in the back I wouldn’t have a reason to use it over my T9/T10 .. The speaker can be turned on or off, and it can be used to add mid and high frequencies to a mini speaker setup that covers the low frequencies.. The video format is named “SMV” which sounds like a WMV (asf) offshoot.. The Samsung T10 and T9’s used a file format call svi which was really just the open source xvid (note, xvid is divx backward) video codec in avi container format and some special cookie code to make it slightly incompatible.. I imagine SMV is the same.. I had read someone gave one to their daughter and she puts movies on her player.. I’m skeptical, but if it plays mpeg video, it’s certainly possible..

Extra to this, I mentioned the Toshiba laptop of mine finally bit the dust.. I figured that overheating was the cause.. It probably was a result of not having adequate drivers for the motherboard in linux, there may have been sensors to control the power level based on the temperature of the laptop.. It used a dual core (non-mobility) processor which can run hot. In fact the touch pad was quite hot.. I’d also had it sitting on the sun.. Recipe for disaster.. I couldn’t get it back, so I’m debating what to do with it.. I’m typing this message on my acer aspire one.. I purchased a Thinkpad T30 on ebay for about 210 dollars.. I got some coin tubes on amazon for 15 dollars and sorted and wrapped 210 dollars worth of coins (incl. 15 rolls of quarters) in about two or three hours. It was well worth it considering that spare change will pay for the T30 laptop. Anyhow, I hope it is in good shape.. If so it will replace my old TP 600X.. Thing I love about the TP’s is ample wrist rest and the nub-dot pointer control which works well with mouse clicking.. I hate tapping on a touch pad, it’s really not very easy to control.
