PSP 3000 - Screen Comparison With Slim & Lite + Subpixel Closeups
WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY! And stick ’til the end! The final 2 images are annotated to show the problems with both screens.
—————————-
In the few days since I made this video and the photos here ( http://picasaweb.google.com/xythen/PSP3000# ) the full story has emerged and Sony has made a public statement about the issue. So here are the facts:
Firstly, to clear up some misconceptions, the “scanline” issue and the “interlacing” issue are two COMPLETELY separate problems. The “scanline” artifact manifests as visible STATIC black lines across the entire screen which are constantly visible. This is due to the new subpixel structure of the LCD screen. The “interlacing” artifact is visible during MOTION, and appears as jagged lines (sometimes called a “comb artifact”), and is caused by the LCD updating pixel rows by odd then even lines, instead of progressively (sequentially). I’ve been told by an engineer who works with mobile devices that this is often done to reduce power consumption (displaying 60 fields a second instead of 60 frames). Could this be how those Japanese engineers managed to get battery life equal to the PSP-2000..?
More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSP-3000_series
Lastly, Sony has admitted this is a “feature” (ugh!) of the new LCD screen. This means it was a conscious decision on Sony’s part to use a technology which generated these artifacts, no doubt to cut costs, and therefore happens on ALL PSP-3000s. If it doesn’t happen on yours it just means that you can’t see it, so count yourself lucky!
I didn’t make this video to “put people off” buying the PSP-3000, I just think that people have the right to be fully informed about a product before slapping down £150 only to be greeted with some unexpected “features”. In my opinion it is still an overall improvement over the PSP-2000, but I’d recommend you demo a unit before buying to see if the screen problems are noticeable to you.

It’s the official …
It’s the official theme with a (free) Syphon Filter wallpaper from the PSN store.
I normally use the official WipEout theme for the icons (HIGHLY recommended!) with a custom background, but I thought the additional customised icons might just add confusion.

Which theme do you …
Which theme do you have running on the psp-3000?
Cleary it is custom but the 3000 is not cracked yet, am i correct ?
Is it a sony official with the eagle in the backround ?

That’s fair enough. …
That’s fair enough. But the reason it came out so quickly was because it’s so obvious to some people. Literally about 10 seconds after powering on my PSP for the first time and loading up GTA I noticed the interlacing.
I just think big companies should be called out on their bullshit. This was a cost-cutting decision which wasn’t fully disclosed to the customers. Sony would have been happy to sweep it under the carpet and just leave half their customers wondering wtf is wrong with their screen.

Please read the …
Please read the full description at the side, then decide for yourself. There is no “absolute” best.
In my opinion the improvements of the 3000 outweigh the small flaws, but that may not be the case for you.

I don’t spend much …
I don’t spend much time on diagonal scrollers. Most of the games I have played focus on horizontal or vertical changes.
I wasn’t calling you a propagandist. I was merely stating that the fact that this issue came up so quick draws my suspicion.

Correction: it’s …
Correction: it’s not noticeable in real life BY YOU. Lots of people can see it, and it can be an issue for some games (diagonally scrolling 2D games especially).
If you take the time to read the description at the side you’ll notice that I did not make this video to bash Sony, merely to inform people about exactly what they’re buying.
And no I’m not a propagandist for some rival company, I am in fact a 23 year old student. Now please leave the tin foil hat by the door as you leave. Thank you.

This isn’t even …
This isn’t even noticeable in real life!
I wouldn’t be surprised if this is propaganda some opposing companies dug up to make Sony and the PSP look bad.

As I said in the …
As I said in the description, overall the PSP-3000 has the best screen. However I’d strongly recommend you try one in the flesh before buying, since some people are more susceptible to noticing the interlacing than others.

SO WHICH SCREEN DO YOU THINK IS BETTER ? pls answer
February 16th, 2009 at 12:48 am
If you found the …
If you found the ghosting on the PSP2k really annoying (as I did) then I would definitely recommend the PSP3k. It also has much nicer colours (I think the colour temperature is slightly warmer too), as well as great black levels.
However if you play really fast games (such as racers like Wipeout), then I’d recommend you try it out first in a shop before you buy, cause the interlacing artifacts can become very pronounced during fast motion (see my extra pics at the link in the description).

I have to say that …
I have to say that the PSP-3000 screen is a lot nicer. The colours are a huge improvement (the colour temperature is a bit warmer too), as is the lack of ghosting and the black level (good for Silent Hill!).
At normal playing distances the “interlaced” effect is only really noticeable during very fast movements (such as an enemy flickering as it dies), and it’s not really too distracting.
It’s just a shame they cut corners again with the new screen when it could have been better.
