The latest Megaten game is a tactical JRPG for the DS called “Megami Ibunroku: Devil Survivor”. I hear an English version is forthcoming, and with all the mainstream attention surrounding “Persona 3″ & 4 as well as the recent success of quirky DS RPGs such as “The World Ends With You” it’s not exactly surprising that Atlus has decided to release MIDS outside Japan as well.
In any case, this short video shows the flashy introductory sequence from the Japanese version of the game as well as the first battle. The game’s overall style resembles the latest Persona games (as well as the TWEWY) but the tactical JRPG element - while quite familiar in its own right - is certainly not something you see everyday in a Megaten game. Can’t say much else about this game, but the nice graphics, great soundtrack and the turn-based combat is enough to get me interested…

If you’re not a gamer I’m not sure this title is particularly well-suited for your purposes. Despite the sweet visual style, the gameplay is comparatively advanced and the game is part of a series intended for very experienced gamers.
Although I don’t know much about it, I do believe there are some simpler PC games specifically designed for teaching basics of the Japanese language (and there’s also the Nintendo DS title “My Japanese Coach”, although I’ve heard it’s unfortunalety rather bad).

Demiath. I’m learning Japanese. I’d like to play the English version until I’m familiar with the game play (remember, I’m not a gamer), and then switch to Japanese, for the language challenge. Looks like I’d have to buy two copies of the game, one of them an expensive import.

There are quite a few translated games in which the player can choose between English and Japanese voices, but very few include the option to switch between English and Japanese text (at least among the games released in Western countries).

Perhaps I may be wrong with my opinions, but however then again I may be right. Besides each person has there own opinions, and besides I loved games such world ends with you and Super Robot Tyson OG Saga: Endless frontier so it seems my thinking may not be of just bad concepts.

lets not argue for the wrong reasons here. i think AnimeMike used “horrible concept” incorrectly. Mike just doesn’t like how it doesn’t look as appealing as things do these days. if they had well animated sprites and effects, i’m sure mike wouldn’t be complaining. as for me, i like that SMT changes with the times, but remains true to it’s core. SMT has always had been reserved to maximize on it’s darker/more mature themes. here, giving conforming art, but conserving old-school game-play.

Theres a major difference between a good looking srpg and a bad looking one, I’ll give some good examples such as Disgega or however you spell it has produced 3 titles following a great concept, Dragon Quest 5 although in rpg that on the ds looks ok but still works a great concept. Now this game the chars to me look out of place, the enemys are stiff as a board in battles, and the over head view of the battlefield is only thing worth saying looks ok, unless this game looked better then maybe.

I don’t see why that’s a horrible concept at all, it worked fine with Bahamut Lagoon and ASH but isn’t one that’s been overdone. I’d rather this than the standard SRPG fare for MegaTen.

SMT are great, but the concept it has taken with this game is horrible. It plays like an SRPG, but as for the battles can we say tactics meets old fashion dragon quest setup.
