I’m an ex-recording industry student, I had to take several classes on this stuff specifically. There are a couple of reasons for why no one got in a hussy over recording the radio. For one, the quality is damn near shit-tastic. Another is that most people didn’t have tape-recorders that could record an incoming radio signal straight to a tape. It was pretty expensive.

But possibly the biggest reason is that radio is viewed kind of like a public good. It’s out there for anyone. You can’t go taxing it because you can’t regulate who has a radio receiver. They’re too easy to come by.

So I guess now you can look at the other end: If radio recording ISN’T bad, then why is mp3 sharing? Well, for one it’s so damn convenient. With a fast enough connection you can download hundreds of dollars of music in about an hour. As opposed to waiting with a tape recorder up to your radio speaker all day. And here’s another point, it’s not just a crappy recording, it’s the exact same file as the one off the CD. Verbatim. No radio static. No fade outs or fade ins with DJs putting in their stupid banter.

I hope these points make a bit of sense to you. Like I said, EX-recording industry. It’s been a while since I actually cracked open a copyright book.

Let’s say you wrote a great song. You got a bunch of friends to play the instruments too. You rent a recording studio to record the song. Your friends want to be paid for performing and the recording studio wants to be paid for their work on your song too. What you do is sell your song on CD. If you sell lots of them, you have enough money to pay your frinends and the recording studio and have some money for yourself too. However, if I buy your CD and make copies for everyone else in the world, you only sold one CD and you go broke.
If I download your music for free, I don’t have to pay you for it and you make nothing on your great song. It’s just like I stole the song from you. Would you like that? Most musicians can’t survive if no one paid for their songs.
Musicians need to make a living too.

People bought more music when they had to cut out the commercials and the talking in between. downloads are straight perfect music. Recording devices have more clarity now. Before the sound was noway near the record album or prerecorded tape. And I guess there not making enough with concerts, t-shirts … and it’s hurting the old pocket book. think about 20.00 times if it goes platinum or gold…. what they actually loose. have a good one.

I think I heard somewhere that’s it’s always been technically illegal to record music off the radio but they never really enforced it. I think they’re only making a big deal about downloading off the net, because they can regulate it a lot more efficiently. They can trace IP addy’s etc. They can actually catch people now, whereas, they weren’t able to really catch people years ago who recorded off the radio.

it has always been illegal just never enforced . now it is done in such mass numbers artist are losing money . it has always been copywrighted which is illegal to have without purchasing

well first it was ILLEGAL to tape record…

But the biggest difference it that once you have music in digital form, it’s very easy to distribute.

You couldn’t send your "casette tape" to 100,000 people with an e-mail attach… or put it up on your website to download.

Look… I like getting something for nothing… but an artist spend thousands sometime TENS of THOUSANDS of dollars to get that song produced… everyone SHOULD pay their freight… if they want to ride.

Wow, you are stupid… To answer your simple and ignorant question, it is illegal to download music in some places, when it is for free. This is because the artist doesn’t know you are doing this, and he hasn’t given you permission to get that music. This is because he loses money that he should be getting for making the music. One has to pay him back for his contribution by buying the CD or something of that sort
