Would you have high speed broadband or even be on the internet if you couldn't download movies or music?
I ask this question as it’s only been a few years that I have been on the internet. My sole reason was that a friend of mine was downloading movies for his personal viewing and as I prefer a good film to most things on tv, I thought I would try it myself. People are of the belief that people like me are getting something for free, but in essence, were not. The computer itself cost a small fortune, then I bought a dvd drive for it, I have also spent a fortune on discs, paper, cases and various other things, and then finally I pay a small fortune a month for the broadband. If I couldn’t download this type of thing then I would just get rid of everything, which includes the phone (it would work out cheaper for me on pay as you go mobile). By the way, I still go to the movies to watch certain movies, just as much as I used to. My belief is that if people like myself were stopped from doing this, it would cost millions to everyone concerned with computers, software and internet providing.
Interesting so far that a lot of people would still have the internet, but apart from business people I cannot see why any of the people who answered would have a need for high speed unlimited broadband. FOO (the saint) seems to think it’s stealing, I myself think the cost of a film on dvd is highway robbery, and the fact that after the first dvd there is likely to be another of the same film with EXTRAS’, then there’s paying to watch a film in the cinema that is supposed to be really good and then finding out it’s a load of rubbish. If I sold the discs then I would count myself as breaking the law, but as I only have them for my own benefit, then I believe that should be o.k. I still by the odd dvd, which is what I did before, the last one cost£20 (now that’s theft). My point is that if I didn’t do it this way the film industry wouldn’t make any more money than they do now, I would just do as I did before and wait a couple of years for it to get to tv, meanwhile others are benefiting.

Yes. We have a website to maintain. I do research. We make purchases of items we can not find locally. We do not download movies or music.

I don’t download either unless legally or on itunes. None of the things you say you pay for include the artists or distributor that worked their butts off so you could watch the fruit of their labours, so you aren’t paying for the movie, you’re stealing it.

It’s this disregard for copywrite thats killing the much needed smaller industries in the UK, Australia and other countries round the world. Just because everyone does it, does that make it right? How would you like someone to take the credit for your hard work? You’d definately see it as theft.

I’m not trying to preach, but think about it, do you really believe it’s not blatant theft?

What’s a tenner to pay for the download? At least you can rest easy knowing you are supporting the industry and aren’t a common criminal.

I have never downloaded a film and rarely download music. I buy both media from shops.

My main use of the internet is to research things that I am interested in or come across during discussions and informal chats. It is much faster than going to a library and you get specialised information from qualified, experienced professionals and from specific societies and bodies. For this purpose alone it is a fantastic tool.

In my job (electronics production engineer) I need to get access to technical specifications and information on all manner of chips, components, cables, metalwork etc. and in the past this could take weeks using snail-mail. The internet allows me to get this information in seconds and to store it electronically, saving on trees and saving the the company that I work for a lot of time and therefore money.

So the internet is a revelation for the provision of information, and for that alone it is worth every penny.

Yes, originally we had it for work and everyone had to wait in turn to use it in free-time. Now we are better set up and have routers and a 6 machine network in the house. My kids use it for coursework, messaging, streaming videos etc. I use it for work, messaging, messing about on here and watching videos. It’s almost never off !
We hardly ever download anything ( but it’s nice to have the option there if we want it) .
My broadband went off for a couple of days a bit ago and we were all lost without it !

The only reason that we got broadband is so we can download music. Don’t bother with movies.

I still will use it and the internet also but I do agree with you that some films after 4 or 5 years should be simply released, the companies make enough silly money.

Particularly I prefer to buy the DVDS or to rent then and then… you know, cause I have the best quality, the subtitles and I save head ache, searches and Virus, so, it depends on your mentality, I prefer to watch less DVDS, but really enjoy the original quality, sound and special features.

Check renting in Amazon and you will be surprised, then you will have much more broadband and time for else.
