AUTO PAN

A feature of a pan and tilt head or dome, which allows the camera to pan continually between two preset points.

AVERAGE VIDEO SIGNAL

Represents the average light level of a picture and is used to open or the iris in an Auto Iris lens.

BACK-FOCUS

A fine mechanical adjustment in a camera that is used to adjust the imaging device relative to the lens to ensure that it is at the exact focal point for the lens fitted. This adjustment is especially important when fitting a zoom lens.

BACKLASH

An effect noticed in Pan and Tilt units, whereby the unit does not come to a smooth stop at the end of the pan movement. This is usually caused by play in the mechanical components of the unit or by attempting to bring the unit to an instant stop.

BALANCED SIGNAL

This is a video signal that has been converted to enable it to be transmitted along ‘twisted pair’ cables. Usually used where the signal has to be transmitted over long distances, which would produce unacceptably high losses in Coaxial cable.

BANDWIDTH

The frequency range required to carry an electronic signal without attenuation or loss.

BARREL DISTORTION

A distortion in a monitor due to non uniform scanning which causes the image to appear to bulge outward like a barrel.

BAUD

Data transfer rate, named after Maurice Emile Baud, Equal to 1bit per second.

BIT

Acronym formed from “binary digit”. The basic unit of information in a computer or digital system Either 1 or 0.

BRAID

A group of textile or metallic filaments inter-woven to form a tubular structure, which may be applied over one or more wires, or flattened to form a strap.

BYTE

A group of eight bits.

BROADCAST CAMERA

High quality, high-resolution camera used by the professional broadcast industry.

CAD

Computer Aided Design. Method of producing complex designs using computer based software programs.

CABLE COMPENSATED AMPLIFIER

High frequency signals are attenuated when transmitted through cables. A Cable Compensated Amplifier boosts the high frequency signals depending on the cable distance. This ensures the minimum video loss.

CABLE CORE

The central part of the cable, which actually carries the video, power and control signals. This can be constructed as a single conductor, or from wire strands.

CABLE JACKET

The outer protective coating, which covers the Cable Core.

CCIR

Optical term, which refers to the distortion of an image as a result of a scattered focal point caused by a defect in a lens. A combination of lens can be used to correct this effect.

CHROMINANCE SIGNAL

The part of the video signal that contains the colour information. In composite video The chrominance signal is multiplexed at a higher frequency than the signal and transmitted down the same cable. In S-VHS this signal is transmitted along a separate cable.

CLADDING

The outer part of a fibre optics cable. The cladding is less dense than the central core, and acts as an optical barrier to prevent the transmitted signal from leaking away from the core.

C-MOUNT

Standard lens mounting with a 17.526mm back flange (distance between the lens mount and the focal point). Normally used on 2/3″ and 1″ cameras and lenses.

COAXIAL CABLE

Term for cable in which two or more conductors share the same axis. Normally consists of a single inner core and an outer shield. This is the standard cable used to carry video signals in CCTV installations, because it does not produce and is not influenced by external fields.

COLOUR STRIPE FILTER

A filter that is placed in front of a colour CCD chip to break up the light into the basic colours (Red, Green, and Blue) The individual colours are then directed at different pixels on the chip.

COMMON SYNC

Device used to synchronise cameras by generating a synchronising pulse that is sent to all cameras connected to it.

How to Get Video On your Sony Psp

Friday, January 30th, 2009

1. Get a Memory Stick for your PSP:
Before you can load any data onto your Sony PSP, you must have a memory stick to store the files onto. The PSP comes with a tiny 32MB card that is only big enough to store a relatively small amount of files. If you paln on watching video clips and installing lots of games on your PSP, you will need to purchase a larger Memory Stick Pro Duo card. These cards come in several different sizes. Exact sizes vary depending on compression rates and quality, but on average, you will need about 5MB for every 1 minute of video. Before you can use a brand new Memory Stick with your PSP, you need to reformat it. If you don’t know how to do this, here’s a quick tutorial on how to format a PSP Memory Stick.

2. Format your Memory Stick on your PSP:
Before you can use a brand new Memory Stick with your PSP, you need to reformat it. If you don’t know how to do this, here’s a quick tutorial on how to format a PSP Memory Stick.

3. Download this test video clip and thumbnail to your computer:
Right + Click (PC, Mac) or Option + Click (Mac) to save each of these two files to your Desktop.
Joe Vs. Wade (ZIP file, 32MB)

4. Connect the PSP to your computer:
If you haven’t already, you need to connect the PSP to your computer with the USB cable that it came with and put the PSP into USB mode. Press the HOME button located on the bottom left of your PSP and then scroll left to the SETTINGS column. Scroll down to USB CONNECTION and press X. The Memory Stick inside your PSP will now mount on your computer.

5. Copy the video onto your PSP:
In order to playback video files on your PSP, you must copy them into the proper folder. The correct file path is MP_ROOT > 100MNV01. If you place video files anywhere else on the Memory Stick, they will not playback properly. If the MP_ROOT and 100MNV01 folders don’t already exist on your PSP’s Memory Stick, then you need to make two new folders and name them in ALL CAPS. Just a reminder, the 100MNV01 folder goes inside the MP_ROOT folder. The PSP requires video (M4V) and thumbnail (THM) files must be named starting with M4V and ending with five random numbers ie. M4V12345.

The following two diagrams should help explain where the video files need to go:

MEMSTICK.IND
MP-ROOT
MSTK_PRO.IND
PSP
100MNV01
(videos)

6. Watch the video on your PSP:
Once the video file has finished coping onto your Memory Stick, you can disconnect the PSP from your computer. Scroll over to the VIDEO column on your Sony PSP and you should now see the video file. Press X to watch it. Enjoy!

A Look at the iRiver MP3 Player

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Iriver introduced their first product, the iMP-100, a portable CD player capable of decoding MP3 data files on CDs, on November, 2000. In the number one global market, iriver was quickly displaced by the introduction of Apple’s iPod. Founded in Seoul, capital of South Korea, iriver makes portable digital audio players, including USB mass storage, multiple codecs, FM tuners, recording capabilities, and upgradeable firmware. Microsoft helped test and market its latest product, the Clix, while specifying upgrades to its graphics engine and chips. Irivers initially dropped UMS support for several of their flash memory based players, in favor of Microsofts’s MTP. The company later released an official “iriver firmware updater” that allowed the users to switch between the MTP and UMS interfaces.

Iriver has developed four models for the portable multimedia player, the audio and video market. They are capable of playing several digital video formats, in addition to playing audio and displaying still images, with two models. The G10 is in progress right now, and will play digital music, video, and games. Its hard drives will be available in a 4GB or 8GB, while its size is less than half of Sony’s PSP.

There are several MP3 companies that are interested in designing and developing MP3 players, and are capable of supporting a user’s entire music library, while others look to create a player that rivals the number one positioned MP3 player – the iPod. After this, a third type of manufacturer arrives, one that looks to create a usable and durable product. This is where the iriver MP3 player enters the picture. The iriver has three basic systems for people looking for a basic digital music player. The iriver T30 series comes in 512MB (120 songs) and 1GB (250 songs) formats with a 24 hour battery life. Both support subscription services, have a voice recorder, and can record directly from a source without using a PC. The T10 has a color display and an unbelievable 45 hour battery life, with the most useful tool on any MP3 player, the FM tuner and recorder.

In an even more dedicated effort to appeal to the athletic, “sporty” type, iRiver designed a MP3 player that the user can take to the pool! An MP3 player with a water-proof cover that retails at $99.99 that is just as compact and easy to use as the regular version. The system has a sleek design and, believe it or not, waterproof headphones that make swimming and enjoying your favorite tunes possible! But some complaints about the iRiver product stem from the lack of data storage and the unfriendly format. When trying to delete a single song it sometime deletes an entire folder or the entire collection altogether.

Work at Home Ware: Tips For Computer Home Businesses

Friday, January 30th, 2009

The owner of a home business that uses a computer would do well to learn her or his way around the hardware and software. This can make a more efficient computer home business system, saving time and money. The first step to a more efficient computer system for your home is to update your PC or laptop’s software and hardware on a regular basis. This will keep your computer system a state of the art product.

Updating software is a breeze, with most computer systems and software systems working hand in glove to prompt you to download the upgrades and a one-click installation that, with typical broadband speed, will complete in less than a minute. Some software programs upgrade in the background without your even being aware of it or even noticing any system slow down while you use your computer to work at your home business.

Hardware upgrades are a little harder to keep track of. A business owner who is less than a geek should find a beginning level computer magazine that will tell the owner the latest products as well as their features and uses. Handy peripherals come along brand new just about every day. Things like Web cams and CD burners can help facilitate a home business with the computer.

Getting online without any interruption - either through broadband or DSL - is important. A home business owner wouldn’t want a consumer getting a busy signal when it’s time to call and buy, nor would she or want to spend quality sales or marketing time waiting for a home business computer to upload.

You have to be a security expert but you have a complete understanding of the basics of the threats to the computer system you depend on to keep the business up and running. As a business owner you should understand the meaning of such threats as viruses, Trojan horses, worms, phishing and spoofing. Virus protection, and other common security software is a must for a home business computer. While the most common security products are Norton and MacAfee there are some free security products that are excellent protection as well - AVG, SpyBot Search and Destroy and AdAware.

The owner of a home business computer can save a lot of time, energy and repair fees by knowing the up to date ins and outs of computer maintenance and troubleshooting.

IPod Video Downloads Options

Friday, January 30th, 2009

iPod video downloads are becoming very popular nowadays. It all began with the improved iPod technology which has enabled iPods to play video. These new iPods are affectionately called Video iPod or iPod Video. Though the screen is small, it is still good enough as an entertainment source when we are away from our homes.

The capacity of iPods has grown over time. With 80 GB memory, you can watch up to 50 movies assuming each is a 2 hour show. The only limitation is the battery consumption. Your battery could only last you as long as one full length movie.

So where are the places you can find iPod video downloads? One obvious source is iTunes which is loaded with music videos, TV shows and movies. Feed your iPod with the latest iPod video downloads such as CSI, Prison Break, etc. You do not have to purchase the whole season as you can have the option to buy just one episode. This is really helpful if you have missed one episode and want to play catch up. Each episode can be purchased at $1.99.

Some of us prefer to watch non-commercial iPod videos. The good news is you can find extremely fascinating iPod video downloads at Google Video, Yahoo Search Video, AltaVista Video Search, iFilm, Video Bomb, Metacafe and YouTube. Occasionally, you may receive these homemade videos in your mail sent by your friends. Funny as it is, some of these have been viewed millions of times. There are also videos of old classical movies in the public domain. You may even find some educational videos uploaded by academics. These places are great if you are looking for comedies and unreleased movie clips. Searching through the library is also easy and dummy proof.

In recent months, membership sites that offer unlimited iPod video downloads are gaining popularity. Latest movies like Saw 3 and TV shows like Desperate Housewives, Heroes etc can be found and downloaded. For a onetime fee that even kids nowadays can afford, you get to download as many iPod videos as you wish. The last count at these sites estimated the number of users to be in the range of millions.

But not memberships are the same. There are some things you have to pay attention to such as the downloading speeds, the music selection and genre, instructional guides and tutorials, level of IT security and protection against adware and spyware, full technical support and more. Remember to read up reviews on each download site before you settle for one. Places like forums, blogs and newsletters are great places to start your online shopping research.

How to Shop for Digital Cameras

Friday, January 30th, 2009

There has been a technological revolution over the last twenty years. From the spread of the pc to the rise of CDs, DVDs and MRP3 players; how we approach and record our images of the world is changing. One of the most significant developments to have appeared on the market has been the digital camera. Almost everyone who owns a pc also owns a digital camera. The beauty of these is that you can view your picture as it will be and then decide whether to snap or not-once snapped you can see the picture again. Pictures taken with a digital camera can be uploaded to a computer and then printed out on the special paper that you can buy; alternatively you can put them on disc and take them to a professional processor.

The digital camera is uniquely different from what went before. Prior to the invention of the digital camera, even the most high tech cameras depended on mechanical and chemical processes. Digital cameras work differently because they have an inbuilt computer that records images electronically. Basically they are filmless cameras. When they first came out digital cameras were beyond most people’s budgets-as they have become more popular, the price has dropped to the point where they are as affordable and flexible as similarly priced film cameras. The amount of images you are able to store depends on the amount of memory you have-storage can be anything from 16mb to 256mb. The memory size also has an effect on the resolution of the pictures you are taking-memory cards are removable however, and can be replaced with something that has more storage capacity.

There are three main styles or shape of digital camera, the first is small enough to fit into a pocket, it is the most sort after style and also quite expensive. Next you have the standard size, which is bigger and able to do all the things that the point and shoot camera will do. This model is good value for money. Finally there is the digital SLR which produces the best photographs. It is an extremely flexible model and you can switch lenses with this one, but these enhanced features come with a corresponding price tag.

Other information you should be interested in when buying a digital camera is pixels-briefly put, pixels are the dots that go to make up a picture. These pixels are measured in thousands of such dots; called megapixels. The more megapixels you have the sharper your pictures will be and the bigger the price tag on the camera. If all you want to do is produce 4×6 photos and maybe email some images then a 4 megapixel camera should be adequate for your needs. You need to bear in mind however, that the quality of the images you produce depends on three things; the speed of your computer, the type of software that the camera works with, and the quality of your laser or inkjet printer.

The final thing that you might want to bear in mind is optical zoom-this lets you magnify what you are shooting and gives you more control over framing the shot. The one most recommended for flexibility is the 3x optical zoom, don’t let vendors confuse you with digital zoom-it is not a viable consideration. With this information at your fingertips you should have no trouble in purchasing you first digital camera.

What kind of cameras are used in the film industry today?

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Of course, it's expensive to buy these equipments but I'm just curious about it. What other companies design or manufacture in specificity in film cameras only?

Most "Hollywood" feature films and one-hour narrative episodics are shot with film. As HD technology progresses, some features and television are using electronic acquisition.

There aren't compiled statistics, but in my twenty years of experience on hundreds of sets, Panavision equipment has by far been the most popular and used. Arriflex is second and others, like MovieCam and Aaton, show up from time to time.

As technology and economics evolve, most film equipment companies have devoted resources toward developing electronic acquisition tools as well to compete. So, Panavision has offered the Genesis, while ARRI offers the D21, and new cameras, like RED, are new tools for the cinematographer.

As of this moment, though, if you were to walk onto every feature film set around the world, you would likely see a Panavision camera being used as the "A" camera. Panavision has "Panavised" other cameras so that they will be more useful for Camera Assistants. You can NOT buy Panavision cameras and equipment. Panavision is rental only. All other camera types can be purchased or rented from camera equipment houses that are located around the world.

Indie (Independent) filmmakers are usually on a tight budget, so on those sets, you'll see a large variety of cameras, mostly "digital," now that "24P" is within their budget. It's for that reason that most film festivals around the world have adjusted to allow digital screenings for movies.
